Terms of service

This is the agreement between you and Octavo. It covers what the service does, what you pay, who owns what comes out of it, and how either of us can end it. Plain language on purpose.

Last updated 2 August 2026

Octavo is early. Accounts and billing are still being connected, so anything below that describes payment applies from the moment you are first charged, not before.

01Who this is between

"Octavo", "we" and "us" mean the operator of getoctavo.com. "You" means the person or company using it. Using the service means you accept these terms. If you are agreeing on behalf of a company, you are confirming you are allowed to.

You need to be at least 18, or the age of majority where you live.

02What the service does

Octavo researches guide ideas, writes and designs the pages, sources licensed photography, and exports a print-ready PDF along with copy for a storefront listing.

It is a tool, not a publisher and not an advisor. We do not review what you make, and we make no claim that a guide will sell, rank, or earn anything.

03Accounts

You are responsible for your account, your credentials, and everything done through it. Tell us promptly if you think someone else has access. One account is for one person unless your plan includes additional seats.

04Plans, builds, and payment

  • Paid plans bill monthly or annually in advance. Annual is charged as ten months.
  • Plans meter builds. One build is one complete guide. Revising or re-exporting a guide you already built does not spend another.
  • Unused builds do not roll over. Going past your monthly builds costs $3 per extra build rather than blocking you.
  • Prices can change. We will tell you before a change affects a renewal, and you can cancel first.
  • Taxes are yours where they apply.

05Refunds and cancellation

Cancel any time. Your plan keeps working until the end of the period you already paid for, and it does not renew after that. We do not prorate a partial month.

Fourteen-day money back on any first paid subscription. Email us within fourteen days of your first charge and we will refund it, whether or not you used your builds.

06Who owns what

You own what you make. The copy, the pages, the PDF, and the listing text belong to you. You can sell them, bundle them, give them away, or rewrite them. See the commercial license for the detail, including the one thing the free plan does not include.

We own Octavo itself: the software, the design system, the templates, the mark, and the name. Nothing here transfers any of that to you.

We do not claim ownership of anything you upload or write. You give us only the permission we need to store it, process it, and show it back to you.

07What you may not do

  • Generate material that is illegal, defamatory, or infringes someone else's rights.
  • Produce medical, legal, or financial guidance presented as professional advice when it is not.
  • Resell access to Octavo itself, or use it to build a competing generation service.
  • Scrape it, reverse engineer it, or run automated load against it beyond ordinary use.
  • Share one seat across a team on a plan that does not include the seats.

We can suspend an account that does any of this. Where the breach is fixable we will say what is wrong first.

08AI output, and the part you have to check

Guides are generated by a language model. Models get things wrong. They can state something confidently that is not true, and two people asking for similar guides can receive similar structure.

You are responsible for reading what you publish and for its accuracy. If a guide gives advice in a regulated field, that responsibility is entirely yours. Octavo gives you a studio to edit every page for exactly this reason.

09Photography

Photos come from Pexels under its licence, which permits commercial use without attribution. Your export notes credit the photographer anyway. If you replace a photo with your own, you are confirming you have the right to use it.

10Availability

We aim to keep Octavo up but we do not promise an uptime figure. It can go down for maintenance, for a dependency we do not control, or because something broke. Features can change or be retired; if we retire something you rely on, we will give notice and a way to export your work.

11Liability

The service is provided as is. To the extent the law allows, we exclude implied warranties, and we are not liable for lost profits, lost sales, lost data, or indirect losses.

Where liability cannot be excluded, it is capped at what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing here limits liability for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited by law.

12Ending it

You can close your account whenever you like. We can end this agreement if you break these terms, or with thirty days notice if we stop offering the service. If we end it without cause, we refund the unused part of anything you prepaid.

Export your guides before you close an account. We are not obliged to keep them afterwards.

13Changes to these terms

We can update these terms. Material changes get notice by email or in the app before they take effect. Carrying on using Octavo after that means you accept them; if you do not, cancel.
